My name is Ali. Here’s a bit about me and my musical journey and then about how Mabel Fyne came about.
I live in wonderful ADELAIDE. Life’s pretty simple really. I love my work as a psychologist, I have a gorgeous daughter, Lizzy, with my partner Luke, a creative teacher, musician and vintage audio guy. We’re all musical. I love my family & my lil community in the ADELAIDE hills where we all play sport (tennis!), work on our music & live a bit of the quiet life. I took up piano lessons in 2018 and might do my grade 2 exam next year.
Since being a parent (insert blog about this too!) I’ve simplified everything from necessity. I’d love to still be playing live, jammin w my band but atm its songwriting & recording as that is what my time allows for. And I guess that’s the bit I love the best coz that’s the bit that never died. It’s slow work but I’m ok with that.
I’d love to have a body of work that is just my creative self, my songs. That is the idea. Whether it progresses into anything further we’ll see.
I work mostly in a room at home aka home studio, with some of Luke’s leftover gear plus my own stuff. There’s the RME babyface interface w an LA610 compressor. I use SM58 & Audiotechnica AT4047 microphones and a Maton Electric Acoustic. That’s pretty much it. Add on some speakers and whatever electric guitar is lying around (lately it’s been my old Telecaster).
The songs are pretty much guitar and voice sketches. I want to program drums and keys etc but I’m just not atm – ie lazy. I guess I get put off by the long stints of time needed so i stick to the basics. Well, you see tennis takes up quite a bit of time too! so something’s gotta be sacrificed and alas it is band. (tennis is awesome btw).
I hand the recordings to Luke for mixing. He’s got the ears the knowledge and the gear. I sometimes get his input on arrangements but mostly I just do it all. It’s quite free and I don’t worry if the song is not perfect, as long as it makes enough sense. I want to learn mixing so then I can DO IT ALL but im a lil scared of entering that huge realm. I probably will, though.
As i get older it’s more about legacy than fame. Leave something behind. Collect a body of work and be proud that I did that. That’s pretty satisfying.
