Tennis 🎾

What a freaking great sport. Why did I discover this so late? Sport is awesome. I regret not being a sports person forever. I gave it up at school. Ah well. It was music i guess and partying. Damn youth wasted on the young. I could have foregone many hangovers if i just played sport. Oh well the time is nigh.

Tennis is my symbol of finally accepting my stage of life. I was so stuck before. In between youth and old age. I’m struggling to say middle age well I’m not 50 yet. I felt too old to be at bars doing the local band thing and too tired to be at pubs hanging with older music crowds. I wasn’t sure where I fit anymore. Was i just a has been? Fuck that. Well. a never was maybe. But i never wanted to stop doing cool stuff. i needed a gang. Tennis hasn’t given me a gang like music did, but it’s certainly a community. And it offsets music so well. It’s been my knight in shining armour helping me segue gracefully and more happily into middle age where i can still do my music work, have a family. A bit sadly I realize, it’s filled the hole left by missing band gang 😦

Tennis is competitive and fun and you can do it into old age. All walks of life do it. And it’s so skillful you could never stop learning. It’s an advanced sport, man. the geometry and physics aspects are fascinating and it’s creative. It’s so cool to watch. I love watching Kyrgios’ tennis. And Ash Barty is my hero.

Like music, you face yourself in tennis. How do you handle the difficulties. How you get better. How your brain operates. Programing muscle memory and then just being in the zone. Trying really hard but trying not to try too hard. It’s so zen, man. The famous book ‘The inner game of tennis’ says it all. Also reading ‘Winning Ugly’ by Brad Gilbert. Yes!

Tennis, Music, Psychology – a match made in heaven.
